1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE vacuum and WORSE customer service!   July 27, 2010
B. Etgen
Let me get to the point quickly... DO NOT BUY A DYSON, ESPECIALLY THE DC-14!!!
I returned 2 DC-14's in 5 days, and will never buy another Dyson product!

The first DC-14 I bought was the demo model from Best Buy at $269.00. After minutes of using in on my carpet it started making an awful noise. I looked everywhere to find the source of the problem and found the brush, already broken and in several pieces. I assumed the issue was abuse from the store, as it was a demo model and previously used. I returned it for my full refund and looked elsewhere to find a good deal.

The second DC-14 I purchased through Amazon and was brand new, in box, at $299.99, a better deal than a demo model. Again, within minutes of vacuuming my carpet, it made the same awful noise as before. I looked everywhere and didn't find any reason why it would be making that noise, however, it seemed to be coming from the brush. I called Dyson's helpline this time and the person I spoke with had me let her listen to the noise. She informed me the problem was my carpet, that the vacuum was SO powerful that it was literally sucking up the carpet into vacuum and the brush was getting stuck and the sound it was making was the motor. She told me I needed to vacuum my carpet on the bare floor setting so the brush would not spin and that if I still did not receive the results I was wanting that I could call back and someone would help me take a part off of the inside of the vacuum that might possibly help the noise to stop.
I tried vacuuming my carpet on the bare floor setting, like the Dyson employee had suggested, and was not happy with the results, it did no better than my old $70 vacuum! I called Dyson back and spoke to a different person and explained my situation and was told there is NOTHING they can do. She told me the vacuum is too powerful and that I need new carpet! I expressed my anger with her, that I was upset to pay $300 on a new vacuum to have it not perform properly and she, again, told me there is NOTHING she could do. I informed her I would be returning the vacuum, writing an awful review, and never purchasing another Dyson product and she did not care in the slightest!!

5 out of 5 stars cleaner is better   July 21, 2010
L. Watson (Georgia)
I, like other reviewers researched vacuums for weeks before purchasing. I looked at all makes and models under $500. I was down to a couple of dyson models, which I had said I'd never buy because they were simply too expensive. I went to the dyson website where I was able to compare them side by side and found that this model has a longer power cord, bigger dust bin and more power. So I bought this one for around $250 factory refurbished. The vacuum came in perfect/like new condition.

This vacuum cleans better than any other vacuum I've ever used. I vacuum my floors once a day at least and I'm always so surprised at how much it cleans. The suction is very powerful. So, if you're looking for cleaner floors, this is the one to get. With previous vacuums, I have attempted to use them in the "bare floors" position and I always end up sweeping anyway. I am very pleased to say that this vacuum gets up more dust and dirt on my bare floors than I can get with my broom. WOW. I honestly, rarely, if ever, use a broom on my hardwoods anymore.

I will totally agree that the wand device is very awkward and not easy to use. I did read another review that said I can disconnect the wand from the hose, etc - so I'll be doing that next time. but the neat coiling method for the hose seems to be so tight that it's hard to use without tipping the vacuum.

In the end, my cleaner floors are far more valuable than the things I need the tools for. Understand, that the tools are excellent, just difficult to use.

I absolutely love this vacuum. I would buy it again if I had a need to.

4 out of 5 stars Super powerful, but a bit too powerful?   July 21, 2010
Chiu Kwan (San Francisco, CA USA)
First off, I would like to say that this vacuum is really good and it picks up almost 98% of the dirt/dust in my house.
I would like to mention some few cons why this isn't a 5 star vacuum.

#1: Very expensive, about $300-400, I bought this for $300 on sale at Bestbuy.
#2: A bit too powerful, if you have a small rug, it will easily suck it up and not letting you vacuum. Meaning when you try to vacuum your rug, the rug will lift up.
#3: The cord... come on now, $300 for this baby and it doesn't have a cord rewinder?
#4: The hose... argh, for some reason I feel it's a bit cheap and it's really hard to reach 10+ feet when you're only 5 feet tall.
#5: BIGGEST REASON: The extremely loud noise when you accidentally vacuum the wrong stuff. Like your own cords or something that wasn't meant to be vacuum. It will make these very very terrible noise that will even freak you out wondering if your vacuum is broken.

But overall... it's a really good vacuum, I would recommend it if you're afraid of the "horrible" noise it produce. Note: This vacuum is quite quiet compared to other vacuum's brand, if you don't vacuum the wrong stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Best vacuum I have ever used.   July 10, 2010

I was so tired of buying vacuum cleaners that would not clean my floors. Have finally found one that completely meets my expectations and then some. Wish I had made this purchase years ago. Believe me, it is worth the money!

1 out of 5 stars Dyson lacks quality   June 27, 2010

I purchased a Dyson DC14 4 years ago. I had previously owned a 67.00 Hoover, which lasted more than 15 years. The Hoover finally quit working and based on my perception; I guess off commercials, I decided to spend the money on a Dyson. We purchased it at Costco for 400.00 thinking it would be a 20-year investment. The vacuum was okay, but nothing much better than the Hoover I paid a lot less money for. Well about 1 month ago it was on the landing of our staircase and it tipped over and fell down the stairs, may 10 or so. The plastic piece broke on the back. My wife called Dyson and asked how to get the unit repaired, as it was within the 5 year warranty period. She was advised to take it to a repair center. The repair center quoted 240.00 to repair it, as the crack was on the main body. I went in to the repair center and talked to the repairman. I told him it advertised a 5 year warranty, he said that not all warranties are the same. Dyson's warranty only covers workmanship. He said he encountered this situation a lot where people come in thinking the vacuum is covered under a warranty and find out the fine print only covered workmanship, which cheap plastic parts do not constitute poor workmanship.

I called Dyson myself and explained my frustration with the durability of the vacuum as well as the expense in repairing it. He basically told me it was not covered by the warranty.

The problem I have with Dyson is they price their vacuums high, giving the consumer the impression it is a high-end unit. I have since discovered this is a cheap mostly plastic vacuum made in China. You can't change the belt for $10, you have to change the assembly for $40-$50. If something breaks, Dyson gouges you for the replacement parts. And their customer service was non-existent.

All I can say is my $67 Hoover lasted 4 times as long and cost 65% less.

I wouldn't buy another Dyson or recommend anyone else buy one either.
