Broke after 3 months! March 16, 2010 Daniel W. Stouch (Acton, MA) I loved it for the 3 months that it worked. Now I have to pay to dispose of the battery. Make good use of it for the 1st three months because it will break right after that. It basically cost me $3 per day to use until it broke.
Useless Unless You Love to Tinker With It. March 15, 2010 Amy Rogers (San Diego, CA) I've had my Roomba for just over 2 years now. I had to replace the initial one I bought because it quit working within the first 2 months. If you do buy one, purchase it through the company's website directly or else you will have to take up any problems you have with it at the store you purchased it from. Fortunately, iRobot does have excellent customer service when purchased through the website. With my particular Roomba I've so far had to replace 3 cleaning head modules, now I've got the 9 beep error code and was told today that the entire unit would need to be replaced. I was offered an upgrade for $160, but am not going to waste any more of my money on it. I have 1 dog and 2 cats, which is why I have the pet model and vacuum everyday. The dust bin needs to be emptied daily and more annoying than that is the rollers need to be disassembled and cleaned EVERY time it's used. This requires flipping the robot over, removing the dust bin, pulling both rollers out and taking off the 4 tiny parts that are connected to the rollers, removing all the hair by hand, using a thumb nail (because the cleaning tools they give you are also useless) to remove the hair collected in the deep well that the end cap sits in and then put the whole dang thing together again. The engineering is so poor that the rollers don't actually push the hair into the dust bin, but rather collects it in tightly wrapped knots around the ends of both brushes. The hair also works it's way into the gears inside the machine and eventually breaks the cleaning head modules. Thank you very much, but I'll just plug in my vacuum from now on. I've had the Roomba for 2 years, but not counting all the down time it's had waiting for repair I've probably only used it for 1/2 that time. I have a small 1300 sq ft house and only use it downstairs on the carpet only, maybe 500-600 sq ft. I regret wasting so much money on it, but I have Multiple Sclerosis and really was looking for a way to make housework easier. I would love to try the Electrolux Trilobite, but I'm afraid of spending even more money on that that I don't have. Will be doing research on it though.
Wife's new best friend March 12, 2010 H. James Dobson (California) While this "robot" will not clean as deep as a Dyson it is really great on hard surfaces. Carpets are cleaned on the top surface however to get really deep dirt you would need something with more suction. Quiet, efficient and effective.
Great Vacuum For the Lazy March 9, 2010 Katherine E. Butler (Covington, LA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my 2nd Roomba. The 1st was a 530, 3 yrs old & not on a timer. We upgraded the the 560 just for the convience. The quality is the same. If you are home every day, get the 530. I have a dog & cat in the house with all hard floors. I would go crazy if I had to clean that every day myself. This is by far the best investment I have ever made. The only improvement they could make would be better bump sensors. It hits the furniture pretty hard & leaves marks.
Beware - DOES NOT RESUME CLEANING AFTER CHARGING March 9, 2010 bghunter 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall the iRobot is a nifty little cleaner. It appears to accumulate a decent amount of dust. For the most part, it avoids gingerly obstacles, but due to the IR sensor, it sometimes bangs into dark objects with a thud. The cleaning pattern is OK, cleaning some areas more than it needs to and other areas not quite enough. Six out of ten times, the iRobot returns to its base while other times you will find it sitting in the hallway, apparently lonely and lost.
My biggest complaint and probably because I feel misled is that the product description states "The vacuuming robot returns to its self-charging Home Base to dock and recharge between cleaning cycles or when the battery starts to run low." This statement easily leads one to believe that the iRobot will resume cleaning where it left off once it is fully recharged, like some other brands do. But Nooooo - not only does it not resume cleaning automatically, it totally forgets where it left off and starts the cleaning cycle from the beginning even if you were to manually start it. So if the iRobot needs to recharge after cleaning half the space, it will never finish cleaning the other half once it recharges. All this was confirmed thru iRobot technical support, which wasn't half bad BTW.
